I’m not just talking about clothes for cold weather. Although that might be necessary when you’re heading south and your first stop for a week is in an area with blowing snow and -20 temps. Fortunately I have family here in Calgary, AB Canada where I can leave my winter woollies since I may need them when I return the end of February.
No, I’m talking about something more introspective! Like patience, tolerance, acceptance, understanding and gratitude. Maybe even some joy and humor! Life in general can be full of challenges, travel is no exception. Delays, poor service, rude people and changing circumstances can affect all of us.
In the past two weeks I made route and accommodation reservation changes due to demonstrations in Chile. The ship I’m traveling on to Chile is experiencing mechanical problems and port stops have been changed. And the severe weather and road conditions where I am has caused the cancellation of a side trip.
I admit it, I’m a rather nervous traveler. It doesn’t take much to rattle my nerves and heighten my anxieties. However, the more I’ve traveled the less I’m bothered by plan changes, rough flights and unfamiliar environments. But just in case I need it, I carry a selection of remedies in my carry-on bag.
Camomile or tulsi tea for relaxation, mint or ginger tea for an upset stomach. Sometimes I use aromatherapy oils specifically blended for calmness. I have noise canceling headphones and soothing music. I’ve learnt how to use EFT tapping to relieve anxiety. Occasionally I take Gravol for motion sickness since it also calms my nerves and helps with sleeping.
Use whatever works best for you, just remember to pack something. It’s better to be prepared and to take care of anxious feeling before they escalate into a full panic attack.
Many people suffer from anxieties specifically associated with flying, so don’t feel alone. There are many ways to overcome these feelings. I know because I didn’t get on a plane for 20 years due to fear. Flying is still not my favourite way to travel but I can now do it. I even sit by the window now and look out. Wow, the views aren’t continuous like on a train but they are pretty amazing at times.
